How do the international teams do?
One of the issues with the US Open in the past is that the tournament hasn’t necessarily brought the best international competition into the fold. Last season was the first time a team outside of the Triple Crown Tour had won the tournament, with the Australian Mixed team, Ellipsis, beating Seattle Mixtape in West Chester, Ohio. The British Men’s team in attendance last season was expected to cause trouble in that division, but ended up placing eighth.
This year’s tournament doesn’t feature any big international team as the tournament has had in the past, but there are still some chances for upsets. Colombia is represented with two teams in the Men’s division (Ki.e and Urutau), with many of the top players looking to build off of a 6th place finish at WUGC in London just last week. Unfortunately in the Women’s division, Canada is about as foreign as it gets at this tournament with Iris from Quebec, and Fusion from Winnipeg. The Mixed division also has a Colombian team (Voltaje), with some players hailing from the 8th-place national team from WUGC, and the first ever Mixed National team from Panama (Panama did not compete at WUGC).
Maybe moving the tournament off of the July 4th weekend slot (less expensive travel for one) will help USA Ultimate and the tournament directors persuade more top teams, and even more national teams, into traveling and playing.
